WELCOME TO NO LAUGHING MATTER

1. WHO ARE WE?
'No laughing matter' is an amateur theatre company that started in 2002 at the Official School of Languages of Almería. We started as a small group formed by students and some teachers who liked acting and learning English at the same time. We thought it could be a good additional activity to the classes of English. The students were of different levels and depending on this they had more or less important roles.The first play we performed was 'Romeo and Juliet' and it was a great success. After that we have performed a play every academic year.

Now, the students who started have already finished their studies, but many of them continue belonging to the group and we have also increased our number.

First, we decide the play we are going to perform, adapting the play to our group. Second, we decide the Cast and after that we start our rehearsals. Normally we don´t have much time to practise, and the place is also a problem as we don´t have a theatre stage. What we do is that we have our rehearsals in a class outside the school hours and we have our last rehearsal in a borrowed theatre stage where we perform our play.

2. WHY A BLOG?
Adapting a script, preparing a play, everything that is involved in the performance of a play takes so much time and effort that I thought it could be a good idea to show my work in case it could be of any help to other teachers or theatre groups. That´s what the internet is for, isn´t it? To share information.

3. WHAT PLAYSCRIPTS CAN YOU FIND IN THE BLOG/PLAYS HAVE WE PERFOMED?
The playscripts you can find in this blog and thus the plays we have performed are the following:

THINGS YOU CAN USE FROM THIS BLOG

THE PLAYSCRIPTS
The scripts are at your disposal in 'WHAT YOU CAN FIND'. You can use them if you like or adapt them to your necessities.These have all been adapted and simplified from the original already. Sometimes totally new characters have been added to the original ones so that all the members of the group could have a part in the play. Some plays have been performed twice and slight changes have been made in the script from one year to another in order to adapt them to the group.

THE LEAFLETS
We prepare these leaflets for the audience and hand them out just before the performance so that the audience can have some information about the play, the author and our group members.

THE POSTERS
For every play we create a new poster to hang as publicity around the school.

PICTURES
There are also pictures of the plays so you can form an idea of the costumes and the setting.

I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF, AFTER USING A PLAYSCRIPT, YOU SENT ME AN EMAIL OR A COMMENT TELLING ME ABOUT THE USE YOU´VE MADE OF THE SCRIPTS AND HOW EVERYTHING HAS TURNED OUT. OF COURSE I ALSO ACCEPT ANY FORM OF SUGGESTIONS.
