ROBIN HOOD - PLAYSCRIPT - ACT 10 - 2006-7

ROBIN HOOD
PLAYSCRIPT 2006-2007
ACT 10

JUGGLER: Ladies and Gentlemen we´ve come to the end of this story. Robin Hood and Lady Marian fall in love and want to marry, they feel as happy as can be. Friar Tuck is going to marry them, but something happens that brings more happiness to their wedding day. See for yourselves….

Curtains open.We are in Sherwood Forest. King Richard appears disguised, dressed like a monk. Suddenly Robin Hood, Little John and Will Scarlet appear and surround him.

ROBIN HOOD: Stop, good brother. Your purse seems very heavy for a holy man. Come, we will make it light and you will feel better.

KING RICHARD: Who are you? Why are you stopping me?

ROBIN HOOD: My name is Robin Hood, friend to the poor and enemy of the rich and unholy.

KING RICHARD: Villain! I have heard of you a lot.

ROBIN HOOD: Then surely you know that we welcome guests in the forest. You will eat with us as our guest. But remember, you will pay a lot for your feast.

KING RICHARD: I have only forty pieces of gold. I have been with the king in Nottingham, and that took a lot of my money. If I had a hundred pieces of gold, I would gladly give you fifty for the poor.

ROBIN HOOD: Then I´ll have twenty pieces of gold and you can keep the rest.

KING RICHARD: Thank you, but I bring a word from our lord the King. Look this is his ring. He asks you to come to Nottingham to have dinner with him.

ROBIN HOOD: I love no man in the world so well as I love my king. Let´s go to the camp.

They leave the stage.

We are still in Sherwood Forest, Robin´s men and women appear little by little, they are drinking, women are serving drinks and food. There is a wooden table and a wooden bank.
Robin Hood appears with the King.

ROBIN HOOD: Good brother, drink and eat. The deer in Sherwood Forest is excellent.

KING RICHARD: Are these all your men?...And women?

Robin gives the King a cup to drink.

ROBIN HOOD: Yes they are, and I´m very proud of them! They trust me and I trust them. Now I drink a toast to Richard, my only King and only King of England.

KING RICHARD: Why do you drink to Richard? You are an outlaw in his country!

ROBIN HOOD: I´m not an outlaw from the good King Richard. Only cruel men and unjust laws make me an outlaw. Like the Sheriff of Nottingham, he hates me because I don´t let him steal more from the poor. … But that´s enough talk. Let´s be merry for our guests. (He lifts his drink to toast)

King Richard uncovers his head.

ROBIN HOOD: My Lord the King of England, now I know you!
(Robin goes on his knee).

Everybody goes on their knees.

ROBIN HOOD: I ask your pardon, my Lord the King, for me and my men. We are your true servants. Will you pardon us?

KING RICHARD: Yes, I have been learning about you. That is why I came here. And now I know about you. Stand up good outlaw. You are honest and noble. I want you to be one of my men. I give you full pardon. Will you serve me?

ROBIN HOOD: Yes your Majesty, but what about my men?

KING RICHARD: I pardon them too. They can stay in Sherwood Forest and take care of the king´s deer.

FRIAR TUCK: Your Majesty, today we were going to celebrate a wedding. You know, Robin Hood is going to marry Lady Marian.

KING RICHARD: Wonderful, excellent. Today will be a day to be remembered in the History of England.

Lady Marian and Robin Hood take each other´s hand and the King stands next to them. Behind everybody is watching the wedding.

FRIAR TUCK: And the moment has come, to get these two souls together in one…..

ACT 9

Curtains open. We are again in Sherwood Forest. Maid Marian and Cassandra appear on the stage. Marian is wearing men´s clothes. She is also wearing her bow and arrows.

CASSANDRA: But my lady, what are we doing here?

MAID MARIAN: Don´t worry, we are not in danger.

CASSANDRA: How do you know that? What will happen if Robin Hood´s men find us?

MAID MARIAN: Well, that´s exactly what we are here for. They never take anything from women or from poor people or good yeoman.

CASSANDRA: Oh, I hear a noise. (she hides behind a tree).

Robin Hood appears suddenly. He has also covered his head.

ROBIN HOOD: Boy, what are you doing here! (loudly).

MAID MARIAN: That´s my business. Leave me or I´ll fight you.

ROBIN HOOD: You´re a rude but brave young lad. But after one hit of my stick…

MAID MARIAN: I won´t go away. I´m not afraid of you. I´m not afraid of any man who hides away his face. (She dropped her bow and went towards him with her quarterstaff).

He laughed and they started to fight. His staff often touched Marian but never hit her really hard. She could move really quickly. After fighting for some time…

ROBIN HOOD: Let´s stop. I like you. You´re very young, but you´re going to be a fine fighter. Will you come and be one of Robin Hood´s merry men?

Marian threw back her hood. The man stood quite still. Then he threw back his own hood.

MAID MARIAN: Robin Hood!

ROBIN HOOD: Lady Marian, what are you doing here, all alone in this dangerous forest?

CASSANDRA: (Appearing from behind the tree) She´s not alone, she´s with me!

MAID MARIAN: I was looking for you Robin. But I´m wearing boys´ clothes to be safe.

ROBIN HOOD: You were looking for me? Why? You are a friend of the Sheriff of Nottingham, so you cannot be a friend of mine.

MAID MARIAN: But I want to be a friend of yours. I don´t like the Sheriff, I don´t like the way he treats the poor. I like you because you help the poor people, you take from the rich but you don´t keep it, you give everything to the poor. I want to be one of your men.

ROBIN HOOD: But you are not a man, you are a woman.

CASSANDRA: That´s what I tell her, but..

MAID MARIAN: (Ignoring and interrupting Cassandra) But you just said that … that I was a good fighter, I can fight just as well as any of your men… and…

ROBIN HOOD: Even if you fight bravely, I cannot risk your life.

CASSANDRA: That´s what I tell her all the time but she won´t listen to me.

MAID MARIAN: But people say that you also have women in your camp. I want to be one of them. I want to help.

ROBIN HOOD: Lady Marian, you are not an ordinary woman. You are a lady. Life in the forest is not easy, you know. Here you will have to cook, and work like any other woman. Are you sure you want to have that kind of life?

CASSANDRA: I will help my lady, of course.

MAID MARIAN: No Cassandra, we will be just like any other woman in the camp.

CASSANDRA: But my lady, you can´t forget…

MAID MARIAN: That´s my last word, I won´t leave the forest!.
(Cassandra makes a gesture of
helplessness)

CASSANDRA: This girl is so stubborn!

ROBIN HOOD: Alright, women. Come with me. I´ll show you the camp.

ACT 8
Curtains open. We are in Nottingham. The tournament is going to take place. There are two big chairs. The Sheriff of Nottingham is sitting on one of them and Maid Marian is sitting on the other one. Next to the Sheriff, Lord Dunstan is standing, and next to Maid Marian, Cassandra is standing. On one side of the stage one soldier is standing.

SHERIFF OF NOTHINGHAM: (speaking to Lord Dunstan) I know Robin Hood thinks he´s very good with a bow and arrow. He´ll come to the contest, and I´ll catch him. Ha, ha.

LORD DUNSTAN: Are you sure? He would be quite stupid, don´t you think so?

SHERIFF: Ha, ha, he will come. He is too proud of himself.

Three people appear on the stage. One of them is Robin Hood disguised, the others are Little John disguised but only a little and Much the Miller´s son.

MAID MARIAN: (speaking to Cassandra) Oh, I´m so nervous! Do you think Robin Hood will appear?

CASSANDRA: Oh, I don´t think so! My lady.

MAID MARIAN: Look at that man! He is one-eyed. Don´t you think this is strange? To be a good archer you must see with both eyes!

CASSANDRA: Perhaps he is Robin Hood… but I like the big one. Oh, he looks so strong and masculine!

SHERIFF: Soldier!!

SOLDIER: (the soldier approaches the Sheriff) Yes, sir!

SHERIFF: Do you see Robin Hood anywhere?

SOLDIER: (looking around stupidly) No, sir, he isn´t here.

SHERIFF: (speaking loudly) Then he´s not only a villain – he´s a coward too! Let the contest begin.

The soldier blows a trumpet and this way the tournament starts. More people arrive. Allan-a-Dale and Will Scarlet. The contestants are Robin Hood, Little John, Will Scarlet, Much the Miller´s son and Lord Dunstan. They all stand one next to the other.

SOLDIER: Each contestant will shoot at the target only once.

The archers start shooting at the target. Robin Hood is one-eyed.The three finalists are Robin, Little John and Lord Dunstan. Will Scarle, Alan-a-Dale and Much leave the stage.

SOLDIER: The three best contestants will now shoot for the golden arrow.

SHERIFF: And Robin Hood isn´t one of them. He´s a coward.
(speaking to Maid Marian).

MAID MARIAN: So he is a good archer this one-eyed man.
(speaking secretly to Cassandra).

CASSANDRA: Oh, and the big one is a good archer too.

SOLDIER: Archer one, ready to shoot.

Little John shoots.

LITTLE JOHN: Hum, good shot, very close to the centre!

LORD DUNSTAN: It´s a good shot, but I´ll do better.

LITTLE JOHN: Do you think so?

SOLDIER: Archer two, ready to shoot.

Lord Dunstan shoots. Lord Dunstan laughs happily. It has hit the black spot.

SOLDIER: Lord Dunstan hit the black spot. No one can shoot better than this. The match is over.

ROBIN HOOD: True, it was a good shot. But I can still try my poor bow against it.

SHERIFF: Yes, let the stranger shoot. He can´t get any closer, but we have to be fair. Let him try.

ROBIN HOOD: I thank you, good sheriff. You´re very fair.
(making a reverence to the Sheriff).

Robin raises his bow and he shoots his arrow.

SOLDIER: (very surprised) I never saw shooting like this before!

LORD DUNSTAN: Yes, this man is the best archer in all England.

Lady Marian and Cassandra have been gossiping all the time . Now Lady Marian smiles at Robin.

SHERIFF: Stranger, Maid Marian will give you the golden arrow you deserve.

Maid Marian stands up and gives the golden arrow to Robin, she feels a bit shy and embarrassed.

ROBIN: Thank you, Maid Marian. It has been a pleasure to meet you.
(He bows and kisses her hand very carefully).

SHERIFF: (The sheriff approaches Robin) Stranger, you shoot very well. I can use a man like you. Will you work for me?

ROBIN: I´m sorry, sir, but I´m busy with other work.

SHERIFF: Rude dog! Go away from here!

Robin and Little John leave the stage.

SHERIFF: I wanted a prize for myself today: the head of Robin Hood. Well, that coward will soon hear about the one-eyed stranger.
(talking in a cynical way).

Suddenly an arrow nearly hits the Sheriff on the head. It has a note fixed to it The sheriff starts reading the note:

SHERIFF: Here is my eye-patch. Thank you for the golden arrow, Robin Hood. Nooo! Nooooooo! He tricked me! He laughed at me!

The Sheriff leaves the stage angrily, throwing the piece of paper on the floor. Curtains close.

JUGGLER: And the moment has come ladies and gentlemen, with so many women in the camp, only Friar Tuck and Robin Hood had no woman, and the truth, Robin Hood was no young man any more. … So this is the moment for Robin and Marian to meet. They met by accident but it was love at first sight for sure!

Curtains open. We are in Sherwood Forest. Little John, Much the Miller´s son and Robin Hood are together. Will Scarlet appears in a hurry.

WILL SCARLET: Robin, there´s going to be a big Nottingham shooting contest. The Sheriff of Nottingham has organized it.

ROBIN HOOD: Well, that´s a good opportunity to get the prize. What is it?

WILL SCARLET: The prize is an arrow of pure gold for the best archer in all England.

LITTLE JOHN: It´s a trick! The sheriff wants to arrest you. Don´t go!

ROBIN HOOD: I tricked the sheriff before and I´ll trick him again.

MUCH THE MILLER´S SON: But how?

ROBIN HOOD: Don´t worry. We´ll go to Nottingham and three of us will shoot. We will disguise and I will dress so that the Sheriff won´t recognise me! Let´s go, we have to prepare everything.

They leave. Curtains close.

ACT 6

JUGGLER: So, here you see me, Allan-a-Dale, marrying my love. Since then I´ve been with Robin Hood, helping him and his men and making their life a bit happier. The day of my wedding in Sherwood Forest something happened that changed the life of all of us. Listen and see…(he leaves bowing).

Curtains open. We are in Sherwood Forest. Friar Tuck is with Allan-a-Dale and the bride. Next to the bride is her father, he looks very happy and nervous. A little bit behind are Robin Hood and his men.

FRIAR TUCK: So the moment has come for you, Allan-a-Dale and Rose Marie to be married.

Suddenly the ceremony is interrupted by a group of women. They are carrying all kinds of utensils they have taken from their homes.

GREENGROCER: Stop!

All the men look at the women.

FRIAR TUCK: Stop?

GREENGROCER: Yes, stop.

WOMAN 1: Yes, we want to speak to Robin Hood.

ROBIN HOOD: I´m Robin Hood. What are you all doing here?

WOMAN 1: We want to live here, with you in Sherwood Forest.

LITTLE JOHN: We don´t need any women, we are fighters, and we are better alone!

WOMAN 2: The Sheriff has burnt our houses, we have nowhere else to go! And we can fight just as well as you! (showing a big stick).

GREENGROCER: Yes, and if Rose Marie the Bride can stay here with Alan-a-Dale, why shouldn´t we?

All the men look happily at each other except Little John.

LITTLE JOHN: Well, one woman is enough already!

WOMAN 2: Well, you can do with us what you want, but we won´t move! You are very big and strong, but fight with a woman you I´ll tell you who wins!

ROBIN HOOD: Calm down woman! We are gentlemen and would never hurt a woman. I say these women are alone and the Sheriff could put them in prison so… what do you say men?

MUCH THE MILLER´S SON: Let them stay Robin! They can cook and wash our clothes!

WOMAN 1: Yes, it´s time to wash your clothes, you smell horribly!

LITTLE JOHN: I knew it! This is the problem with women, everything has to be tidy and clean!

WOMAN 1: Yes, and you are the first one who´s going to go into the river.

LITTLE JOHN: Oh, no no! This is too much! (He goes away)

FRIAR TUCK: Let´s have peace! God put us both, women and men on earth and we have to live together in harmony! Our enemy is the Sheriff of Nottingham. And now (he takes the Bride´s hand in one of his hands and the groom´s hand in the other hand) By the laws of the Church and by the laws of England, the people present must be asked three times. Only then can a man and woman be married.

WOMAN 2: Oh, how romantic!
(she sighs)

ROBIN HOOD: But this is my forest and we are hungry.

MUCH THE MILLER´S SON: And thirsty too!

All the men laugh.

WOMAN 2: But that isn´t romantic…Friar Tuck…

ROBIN HOOD: (He interrupts the woman speaking in a loud voice) So hurry up, Friar Tuck.

ALAN-A-DALE: (speaking in a nervous and shy way) Yes,…hm, er, let´s finish with this
…(the men start laughing)

FRIAR TUCK: Alright then, I´ll use the abbreviated ceremony. Who gives this woman to Alan-a-Dale?

THE FATHER: I do!

ROBIN HOOD: (proudly) And if somebody takes her away from Alan-a-Dale, he´ll have to answer to me!

FRIAR TUCK: Alan-a-Dale and Rose Marie (The Friar puts their hands together) you are married for the rest of your lives. Be happy and have many children!

WILL SCARLET: Yes, and you can start tonight!

All the men laugh, the bride and the groom look embarrassed

WOMAN 1: But Friar Tuck, this is not a real wedding until the bride and the groom kiss!

GREENGROCER: Oh, how romantic, a kiss!

The Groom kisses the Bride on her cheek.

ROBIN HOOD: And now, everybody, it´s time for the feast, let´s drink and eat!

The curtains close.

A bride appears holding herself to the arm of an old man. She seems very sad.

ROBIN HOOD: Oh, a bride is coming – a beautiful young woman with an old man. Is he her
father?

GREENGROCER: Yes, he is. But the groom is even older. They say the bride doesn´t love him. (speaking secretly).

ROBIN HOOD: Then why does she marry him?

GREENGROCER: I know the girl, she is a good girl but her father owes the groom a lot of money. They say that if she doesn´t marry him they will imprison her father.

LITTLE JOHN: Ah, I know, the rich always win, the poor always lose.

GREENGROCER: Yes, that is always the same story. The groom is a very good friend of the Sheriff of Nottingham.(looking sadly in front of her but then changing quickly and looking very happy) But, young man, look at my vegetables, they are the best in Nottingham. Buy me something…I need to feed my children.

An old man appears, he is the groom and he is also the old knight Robin met this morning..Little John and Robin ignore the greengrocer.

LITTLE JOHN: There comes the groom too. Do you recognize him, Robin? Ha, ha. He is the old knight we met this morning.

Robin approaches.

ROBIN HOOD: Good man (addressing the old knight), let me sing at your wedding. I have a beautiful song. After my song, the bride will love the groom forever.

THE OLD KNIGHT: Come then and sing it after we are married.

ROBIN HOOD: No, you´re not the right groom. Let the bride marry her true love!

THE OLD KNIGHT: Villain! Is that your song?

ROBIN HOOD: No, this is!
(Robin and Little John take off their hats)

THE OLD KNIGHT: Robin Hood and his men!

GREENGROCER: Robin Hood! I´ve spoken to Robin Hood!

Allan-a-Dale approaches and embraces the Bride.

ROBIN HOOD: The wedding is for these two. They will marry today.

FATHER: I know my daughter loves Allan-a-Dale, but it can´t be. I owe this knight a lot of money and he won´t let her go.

BRIDE: Father, don´t worry, I know you love me, I know you feel sad for me.

ALLAN-A-DALE: My darling,

BRIDE: Allan, my love, you know I cannot marry you. Even if it´s you I love. My father will go to prison. The Sheriff of Nottingham will arrest him, I can´t marry you. (crying)

ROBIN HOOD: Little John, where is the golden grain from this morning?

LITTLE JOHN: Here it is.

ROBIN HOOD: (talking to the father) This is a wedding present from Robin Hood and his merry men. Give it to that old knight and you´ll owe him no more money.

THE OLD KNIGHT: (looking astonished) But it´s my gold!

LITTLE JOHN: No, it´s only grain for the mill. Those were your words.

THE OLD KNIGHT: You… you…

GREENGROCER: You shut up! Three hurrays for Robin Hood! He´s our hero!

ROBIN HOOD: Come, let´s go back to the forest, before the Sheriff of Nottingham appears, at this moment the safest place is Sherwood Forest, also for you,old man
.(addressing the father).

They all leave the stage. The curtains close.

Robin Hood becomes famous.
The poor speak his name with love
And the rich speak it with fear.
.
Curtains open. We are in Sherwood Forest. Robin Hood and Little John are sitting on a tree trunk.

ROBIN HOOD: It´s a fine merry morning. (Looking at the sky).

LITTLE JOHN: Yes, but I hope a knight comes by so we can make his load light and take his gold.

A noble man appears.

ROBIN HOOD: You see, we have only to ask and a rich man comes to us.

LITTLE JOHN: I know that old knight. His workers are poor and hungry because he takes everything from them.

ROBIN HOOD: Stop! (Standing in front of him)

OLD KNIGHT: What´s the meaning of this?

ROBIN HOOD: Don´t be afraid good friend. We just want to look inside that fat bag.

OLD KNIGHT: It´s only some grain. I´m taking it to the mill.

Robin Hood throws the heavy bag at Little John, he takes it and opens it.

LITTLE JOHN: Yes, it´s GOLDEN grain – for sure!

ROBIN HOOD: Yes, we should use grain like this to feed the poor. You took it from them and we´ll give it back.

OLD KNIGHT: Thief! Villain! The Sheriff of Nottingham will hear about this!

ROBIN HOOD: Yes, tell him… and tell him that Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest sends his good wishes.

LITTLE JOHN: (As the old knight leaves) Ha, Ha! A good morning´s work, and it´s still early.

ROBIN HOOD: (Laughing) Yes, the day will be beautiful.

They leave the stage. A young lad appears on the stage, he is wearing a harp and he is crying. Robin Hood and Little John appear on the stage again. They look around.

LITTLE JOHN: Maybe the day is not so beautiful after all. I think I hear someone in trouble.

ROBIN HOOD: Oh, it´s a young lad. And he´s crying. (They get close to the lad) Who are you, lad? And why are you crying on this fine morning?

ALLAN-A-DALE: They call me Alan-a-Dale. In happier days, I was a singer. I made people happy with my songs. … But I´m not going to sing anymore. I love a beautiful girl, but she´s going to marry another man this afternoon.

ROBIN HOOD: Well then, lad. Don´t cry about her. She doesn´t love you.

ALLAN-A-DALE: No, she loves me very much. But her father is a poor man. He´s forcing her to marry a rich old knight.

ROBIN HOOD: A gentle, young girl doesn´t want to marry an old knight. What do you say, Little John? Shall we help this lad?

LITTLE JOHN: Ha, ha, yes, that will be a good day´s work.

ROBIN HOOD: Come, lad, there will be a wedding today, but with a better groom.

ALLAN-A-DALE: But where will we find a priest for the wedding?

ROBIN HOOD: True, I didn´t think of that.

LITTLE JOHN: I know a priest. They call him Friar Tuck. He´s a merry fellow and I bet he´ll help us.

ROBIN HOOD: I´ll go and look for him. Little John, go back to our hiding place with Allan-a-Dale and tell the men to get ready for the wedding.

LITTLE JOHN: Right, Robin, but take care.

Little John and Alan-a-Dale leave Robin Hood. He starts walking and leaves the stage. Then a priest appears and sits on a tree trunk, he´s carrying a barrel and drinks some of it then he closes his eyes and starts snoring. On the other side of the stage appears Robin Hood.

ROBIN HOOD: Oh, there´s a priest. I´ll ask him about Friar Tuck. Maybe he knows him. (He approaches the Priest, Robin Hood starts to make sounds so that the priest awakes. After some time the priest awakes surprised).Good father, do you know a holy man named Friar Tuck?

FRIAR TUCK: Yes, I do. He´s a fine man – and a merry one!

ROBIN HOOD: I bet YOU are Friar Tuck.

FRIAR TUCK: And I bet YOU are Robin Hood. The Sheriff of Nottingham speaks highly of you.

ROBIN HOOD: Yes, and I think you are also highly esteemed!
(And both start to laugh).

ROBIN HOOD: Good Friar, our band needs a holy man like you. Will you join us?

FRIAR TUCK: Yes, I will, because I hear the laws of your band are much better than the laws of our times.

ROBIN HOOD: Good. Your first job will be to marry a lad to his love. Come. I´ll tell you about it. (And they both leave the stage.)

The juggler appears again with the curtains closed. He starts to play his mandolin. He sighs.

JUGGLER: Oh l´amour, l´amour… Robin Hood, hero, defender of the poor and weak, can also fall in love..
Lady Marian, never was a maid so beautiful,
Never was a maid so clever,
(sighing),
Oh, l´amour, l´amour.

Maid Marian´s bed room. Maid Marian is brushing her hair, talking with her handmaiden, Cassandra.

MARIAN: And what do you think this Robin Hood is like?

CASSANDRA: An enemy, I suppose, my lady, an enemy of the worst kind.

MARIAN: Really, Cassandra? Why so?

CASSANDRA: Why else would the Sheriff of Nottingham proclaim him an outlaw?

MARIAN: All the more reason I´d like to know what this Robin Hood is like.

CASSANDRA: My lady? (She stops doing her things and starts Looking at Marian unbelievably).

MARIAN: Anyone the sheriff considers an “outlaw” must be a most respected individual.

CASSANDRA: Surely you´re joking, my lady. (Continues combing her lady´s hair).

MARIAN: (quite playfully) Do I? (Maid Marian stands up, Cassandra follows her).

CASSANDRA: Well, you needn´t worry about that outlaw Robin Hood coming here, my lady.

MARIAN: Oh? And why?

CASSANDRA: I hear he only …

MARIAN: You hear?

CASSANDRA: Gossip, my lady, rumours, idle talk heard among housework maids and kitchen help.

MARIAN: And what have you heard, Cassandra?

CASSANDRA: (whispering and putting her hand before her mouth as if saying a secret) He lives somewhere deep inside Sherwood Forest.

MARIAN: The King´s own forest! Impressive. He must be quite courageous.

CASSANDRA: And he is promising to help the peasants.

MARIAN: How so?

CASSANDRA: By robbing the rich, my lady.

MARIAN: Mm, a clever idea!

CASSANDRA: But only in Sherwood Forest.

MARIAN: Only in Sherwood Forest?

CASSANDRA: Rumour says Sherwood Forest is where – rumour says – he´ll be an outlaw. So, my lady, he won´t be troubling you here.

MARIAN: So, I would have to go to Sherwood Forest then?

CASSANDRA: What, my lady? (looking very surprised and frightened)

MARIAN: Nothing, Cassandra, nothing (Sighing and sitting again on her chair) I do hope the Sheriff´s ball will be exciting tomorrow evening. (looking very bored)

CASSANDRA: When you attend any event, Lady Marian, that event becomes exciting.

PLAYSCRIPT 2006-2007

ACT 2

The Juggler appears again. Curtains closed. Starts playing his mandolin, then stops and speaks to the public.

JUGGLER: We have seen our hero. But in every tale together with the hero there´s also a villain. And here´s our skunk: The Sheriff of Nottingham. A skunk of the grandest and smelliest order! A skunk whose smell everyone in England has come to disdain! You see … he, this Sheriff of Nottingham, the king´s representative in our part of merry old England … which is not so merry at this time … is a most cruel and cold-hearted skunk!

The Juggler leaves the stage and the curtains open. We see the Sheriff of Nottingham walking though the forest. Together with him, Lord Dunstan is listening to him.

SHERIFF: These peasants who think they can just walk into Sherwood Forest and walk out with one of the king´s deer for free and then think I, the Sheriff of Nottingham, won´t notice, think I, protector of the king´s forest, won´t do anything about their illegal poaching, these thieves must be stopped!

LORD DUNSTAN: But, my lord Sheriff, your men cannot stand guard in every part of Sherwood Forest every moment of every day.

SHERIFF: (Great sarcasm and cynicism in his tone) Well said, my Lord Dunstan. As if I already didn´t know that!

LORD DUNSTAN: The problem then is how to stop the local farmers from hunting in the Forest.

SHERIFF: I know how! Hang a few of them!

LORD DUNSTAN: Hang, my lord sheriff?

SHERIFF: Yes, hang! Let these lazy, good-for nothing peasants who dare take their crossbow into Sherwood Forest swing from the end of my rope!

LORD DUNSTAN: But, sire, you cannot have every poor English peasant swinging from the end of your rope!

SHERIFF: And why not?

LORD DUNSTAN: Who would pay the taxes?

SHERIFF: The issue here is not “paying taxes”! The issue here is the illegal hunting of the king´s deer in Sherwood Forest. And I will not permit this poaching to continue!
(shouting very angrily)

Suddenly a soldier appears holding Will Scarlet, a farmer. And directs himselfs to The Sheriff of Nottingham. He throws the peasant on his kness in front of the Sheriff.

SOLDIER: Sir, Lord Sheriff, I have discovered this farmer hunting the deer of our King,

SHERIFF: (Looking at Lord Dunstan) What did I tell you? (Looking at Will Scarlet) So, you lazy laggard, poaching again in the King´s forest?

WILL SCARLET: No, my lord Sheriff, you have been misinformed.

SHERIFF: Misinformed? (Looking at the two soldiers). Oh, do say. Dare you accuse one of our king´s soldiers of making a false accusation?

WILL SCARLET: (Quickly, most confused) Oh, No, no.

SHERIFF: Or perhaps of lying?

WILL SCARLET: (Just as quickly and even more confused) No … no.

SHERIFF: (Shouting) Silence, sluggard! You are accused of not paying your taxes and trying to kill one of the king´s deer …

WILL SCARLET: I wanted only one deer to feed my family. One deer will last my family many months, and the King has so many deer in his forest.

SHERIFF: And if every family in England poached and killed just one deer every so many months in Sherwood Forest, soon the king would have no deer. And what would happen then
?(Looking round, first at the soldier and then at Lord Dunstan who nods)

WILL SCARLET: (Speaking in a frightened way but then finishing in a courageous way) Then, my Lord Sheriff, I am afraid our king would starve … just as we, his people are now starving.

SHERIFF: You are starving because you are lazy and don´t work hard enough!

WILL SCARLET: One man can do only so much, and our taxes are so high. We must give most of what we grow to the king, and still he asks for more!

SHERIFF: That is not my concern, wretch! You have been caught stealing deer from the King´s forest. I sentence you to death by hanging.

Suddenly Robin Hood and his men appear and surround the Sheriff, Lord Dunstan, the soldier and Will Scarlet. They are all pointing at them with their bows and arrows.

ROBIN HOOD: Who´s going to hang who?

SHERIFF: This man, whoever he may be…

WILL SCARLET: I´m Will Scarlet, sir.

SHERIFF: This man has been caught stealing from our good king.

WILL SCARLET: I wasn´t plotting against our king. I was only trying to feed my family, my wife and seven children. My Lord Sheriff, I´m a very poor man.

SHERIFF: England´s full of poor men! And that is no reason to break the king´s law and poach the king´s deer in the king´s forest.
(Looking very angrily at Robin Hood and emphasizing on the word “king” every time he pronounces it).

ROBIN HOOD: This man (Holding his arm around Will´s shoulder), Will Scarlet, can hardly grow enough food on his tiny parcel of land and the king has a hundred thousand acres in his forest…

SHERIFF: The King has what God gave him…through the divine right of kings.

ROBIN HOOD: But if God has given our king so much, then why should our king demand even more from his poor peasants? Will Scarlet, I think King Richard wouldn´t mind you hunting a deer of his…

SHERIFF: King Richard? You surely meant King John.

ROBIN HOOD: No, you heard me well, King Richard is my King. John is just a tyrant like you!

Everybody starts approaching the sheriff and the sheriff starts shouting. The Curtains close.

ROBIN HOOD - PLAYSCRIPT - ACT 1 - 2006-7

ROBIN HOOD
PLAYSCRIPT 2006-2007
ACT 1

Curtains closed. A juggler appears playing a mandolin (a small guitar)

JUGGLER: Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the story of Robin Hood. The bravest man in Britain, and perhaps the bravest man in the world. (He plays the guitar a little, then he continues speaking) Robin Hood took from the Rich and gave to the Poor. And this song will always be remembered in Britain…

JUGGLER: (singing with a little guitar)
Come and listen, gentlemen
Who are of free-born blood.
I´ll tell you of a good yeoman,
His name was Robin Hood.

Robin was a proud outlaw
The while he walked on ground.
So courteous an outlaw as he was one
Was never none y-found.

JUGGLER: And now I leave you, ladies and gentlemen, with the story of this brave man. Hope you like it, hope you enjoy it. Have a good time, my good people, have a good time.

The Juggler leaves the stage. The curtains open. We can see a forest with trees and in the middle of the stage a fallen branch or trunk over a small river. On the trunk there was a big man fishing. He is Little John. Robin Hood appears. He is carrying a bow and a quiver on his back with lots of arrows in it, and he wants to cross the river.

ROBIN HOOD: Hello, there, giant! Move over – I want to cross the bridge!

LITTLE JOHN: (looking around from one place to another) I think I hear a voice, but I don´t see anyone!

ROBIN HOOD: (taking out one of his arrows from his quiver) Ha, ha! You have a clever tongue. Well, maybe you don´t see me, but you´ll soon feel me. Move – or I´ll shoot you with my arrow.

LITTLE JOHN: Why, my little lad, will you shoot me with an arrow! I have only a stick – a quarterstaff. (He takes out his stick that was tightened to his belt) You are very brave!

ROBIN HOOD: Then I´ll cut a stick for me too.
(He puts his arrow again in his quiver and leaves his bow on the ground. He takes a stick)

LITTLE JOHN: Even a long stick won´t help you, my young man. You´re too little to fight me. Ha, ha.

ROBIN HOOD: You are laughing at me! Can you use your staff? We´ll fight for the bridge. The one who falls into the river is the loser!

LITTLE JOHN: Ha ha, yes! I love a fight and I hope you love a bath!

ROBIN HOOD: Now we´ll see who is going to laugh.

They start to fight, they are both quick and good with their weapons. After some time Robin Hood can hit Little John on the head and Robin Hood starts to laugh but then Robin´s foot goes over the side of the bridge, and he falls into the river.

LITTLE JOHN: Are you hurt? Do you want help?

ROBIN HOOD: Oh no, thanks! I´m just swimming a little. That was a good fight. You´re a strong man. Can I do anything for you?

LITTLE JOHN: (thinking) Well, yes, you can help me find Robin Hood. I want to be one of his men. I hate injustice and I love a good fight.

Robin Hood takes his horn and sounds it and one of his men appeared on the bridge. He has a bow and arrow and is pointing at Little John.

MUCH THE MILLER´S SON: You´ve been in the water, Robin. Did this man throw you in? Shall I throw him into the river, Robin?

LITTLE JOHN: (looking very surprised) Robin! … Are you Robin Hood? Did I hit Robin Hood with my quarterstaff? … Will you forgive me? I didn´t know.

ROBIN HOOD: (started laughing) He wants to be one of us. What do you think, Much?

Much agrees and says yes..

ROBIN HOOD: We like you! What is your name, big man?

LITTLE JOHN: (a bit embarrassed and ashamed) Well, they call me John … Little…

ROBIN HOOD: Little? (and Robin and the rest of the men start laughing) I think we will call you Little John.
.
They start to leave the stage happily . Robin and Little John wait till the end to leave.

ROBIN HOOD: I´ll teach you to use the bow. You´ll soon be a very good bowman because you´re so strong and so tall.

And together they leave the stage. Curtains close.

The EOI of Almería presents:

NO LAUGHING MATTER THEATRE COMPANY
In

The adventures of ROBIN HOOD

INTRODUCTION

Robin Hood is an arquetypal English folk hero; a courteous, pious and swashbuckling outlaw of the medieval era who, in modern versions of the legend, is famous for robbing the rich to provide for the poor and fighting against injustice and tyranny. His band consists of "seven score" (140) group of fellow outlawed yeomen – called his "Merry Men". Robin Hood and his band are usually associated with Sherwood Forest and Nottinghamshire. He has been the subject of numerous movies, books, comics and plays.
In many stories Robin's nemesis is the Sheriff of Nottingham. In the oldest legends, this is merely because a sheriff is an outlaw's natural enemy, but in later versions, the despotic sheriff gravely abuses his position, appropriating land, levying excessive taxation, and he unfairly persecutes the poor. In some tales the antagonist is Prince John, based on the historical John of England, who is seen as the unjust usurper of his pious brother Richard. In the oldest versions surviving, Robin Hood is a yeoman, but in some later versions he is described as a nobleman, the earl of Loxley (also referred to as Locksley), who was unjustly deprived of his lands. In other stories, he has served in the crusades, returning to England to find his lands pillaged by the dastardly sheriff. In some tales he is the champion of the people, fighting against corrupt officials and the oppressive order that protects them.
